Survey Skills

Survey Skills Placements

All participants from the Survey Skills workshops will have further opportunities to explore the issues presented by shadowing those working in a real survey team. These Survey Skills placements are free to participants (although waged participants are expected to meet their own travel costs ) and offer a unique insight into the world of applied survey research. Up to four days of placements can be chosen. Placements for participants interested in field activities could involve a day shadowing an interviewer as they recruit and interview survey participants on your chosen survey and possibly attending an interviewer briefing. Participants may choose to opt for a placement day which focuses on design stages or analysis. Each placement will be arranged individually to ensure the best fit with learning needs. Some points in the cycle which participants may wish to observe include:

  • survey design and development
    • for example: attending meetings, discussing survey content or questionnaire design, observing or analysing cognitive interviews, attending pilot briefings/debriefings
  • CAPI testing/programming
  • fieldwork
  • data coding/editing stages
    • developing code frames, carrying out some coding and editing
  • analysis stages
    • including running analysis using SPSS/Stata
  • developing interpretation and reporting strategies
  • Survey Question Bank
Survey Skills will work together with individual participants to ensure their placements are meaningful and help them to continue to develop their knowledge and understanding of the survey process.
